Utamaro’s Ehon karanishiki (c.1802).

Ehon karanishiki represents one of Utamaro’s most successful books. Every design is distinguished by a certain clarity, uncluttered by dialogue or unnecessary detail.The term karanishiki in the title refers to second-hand Chinese brocade silk robes which were exported to Japan around this time. Robes belonging to Chinese nobility could only be worn at court a few times.
They could not be re-sold to the lower classes in China, thus, they became commodities for foreign trade.
